Smokey Joe Wood is one of 13 pitchers since 1900 to post a thirty win season going 34-5 in 1912. Wood's pitching career was cut short due to injuries but he still registered 117 wins against 57 losses with a 2.03 ERA during his career. Following a back injury Wood would leave baseball for almost two seasons, feeling sorry for himself and trying rehabilitation by stretching out his back. Wood eventually came out of his slumber and decided he wasn't just a pitcher he was a baseball player. Wood contacted long time friend Tris Speaker who helped orchestrate Wood coming to Cleveland to play outfield for the Indians. Wood would play in the outfield for parts of 6 seasons with Cleveland posting impressive numbers including a .366 batting average in 1921 and 92 RBI's in 1922. Wood accepted the Yale baseball head coaching job in 1923. This lot contains an attractively framed signed check accompanied with a large format photo of Wood. The frame is custom made and the check is placed in an acid free matting with archival glass. Very nice signed item from this legendary pitcher!
